Gobi Manchurian

Gobi Manchurian is an Indo- Chinese fried cauliflower dish. It was originally developed by the Chinese community who have lived in Kolkata , India during the time of British Raj.

The taste of this dish varies from milk to hot spicy 🌶️ based on recipe and preference. Though a Manchurian recipe can be made using chicken , mixed vegetables - the most famous one is the use of cauliflower (also known as “gopi”).

There are two types of Gopi Manchurian – gravy version and dry version. We are going to make the dry Gopi Manchurian 👩‍🍳.


Ingredients :

  • 1 big Cauliflower

  • 2 celery sticks (finely chopped)

  • 4 - 5 green chillis (chopped)- as per your spiciness 🌶️

  • 4 medium onions 🧅(finely chopped)

  • Refined oil for frying

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 6 tbsp corn flour

  • 1 ½ tbsp garlic paste

  • 1 tbsp ginger paste

  • 3 tbsp soya sauce (light)

  • 6 - 7 tbsp tomato sauce

  • 1 ½ tbsp chilli powder

  • 1 tsp pepper powder

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • Few spring onions (chopped)

  • 1 capsicum (finely chopped)

  • Salt for taste

Method :

  • Cut cauliflower to bitable size. To wash the cauliflower pieces, add them in a bowl containing hot water and 1 tsp of salt for almost 5 minutes. Drain the water and shift the cauliflower pieces to another bowl.

  • In a bowl , add all-purpose flour, corn flour, salt (according to taste),cauliflower pieces and add little bit of water (almost ½ cup water )and mix well. Careful when adding water , we don’t need a watery consistency.

  • In a heated pan, pour refined oil and add the batter-coated cauliflower pieces and fry them till the pieces attain a crispy texture. Transfer the fried pieces from the pan to plate.

  • In another heated pan, add 2 tbsp oil and 3 tbsp chopped celery and cook it. Then add the chopped chillis and stir it. Add the chopped onions and cook it till the onions are translucent.

  • Add garlic paste and ginger paste into the pan containing the onions and stir well. Add soya sauce, tomato sauce, 1 tsp salt, chilli powder, pepper powder and sugar and stir well.

  • Now add 1 cup water and stir well . (Do check the taste and add salt (if required) at this stage.) You may add your capsicum pieces and stir well .

  • The fried cauliflower pieces are then added to the curry pan and mixed well . Turn off the flame and stir again. Garnish the gobi manchurian with chopped spring onions and serve it .

Serve this cauliflower dish that will fill your appetite.
